Seeking Costume Supervisor/s for Market Town

We’re looking for one or two skilled, community-minded Costume Supervisors to lead the creation of 100 costumes with a local crafts group, ready for rehearsals on 22 August 2026. You’ll have experience in costume, textile, or craft production, and be confident supporting non-specialist makers. Organisation, warmth, and an interest in heritage, storytelling, or community arts are essential.
From HAVERINGLondon Jobs

Market Town is a living heritage project celebrating Romford Market through the legends, myths, and memories of its community. This summer, 25 stories drawn from community workshops will be brought to life in a spectacular costumed event at Romford Market on Saturday 29 August 2026.

We need one or two skilled and community minded Costume Supervisor(s) to lead the creation of 100 costumes (4 per story) co-made with an established local crafts group in time for rehearsals on 22 August 2026.

What You’ll Do
You will receive the 25 signed-off stories from the Heritage Facilitator in late June 2026 and translate them into a costume concept for each character or story group. You will:

  • Develop a clear and achievable costume design concept for each of the 25 stories.
  • Plan how costumes can be made collectively with a community crafts group
  • Ensure all 100 costumes are visually coherent and work together as an ensemble

Havering London will connect you to an established local community crafts group/s. You will lead a series of making sessions across July and August, supervising techniques, managing materials and keeping the production on schedule to meet the 22 August deadline. You must be available for rehearsal on 22 August and the live event on 29 August 2026.

We are seeking someone (or a pair) who:

  • Has experience in costume, textile or craft production professional or community based
  • Is skilled at working with and supporting non-specialist makers
  • Is highly organised and able to plan and manage a production schedule
  • Works well in a community setting and brings warmth and patience
  • Has an interest in heritage, storytelling or community arts

We particularly encourage applications from people based or who have connections to Havering.

Fee: £4000 (if job share between two people split equally at £2,000 each unless otherwise agreed). Material budget to be confirmed upon appointment.
