The Ionians: Providing Havering’s young people with community through music

If you made it along to one of the Market Town events at the end of August, you might have been lucky enough to catch live music at The Mercury Mall. This event was put on by the
Ionians, a music group consisting of young people between the ages of 17-21, funded by Havering Changing. Since January of this year they have produced a series of events, averaging once a month, at MyPlace, Harold Hill.

These young people, with their own events company, are learning how to produce high quality musical experiences for the public, and have created a large network of individuals
their age to watch.

Not only are the Ionian events produced and watched by young people, they also promote the vast, young musical talent we have here in Havering. Anyone who has seen an Ionians gig knows how many different acts go into each night. Some of them are solo acts or duets, many of them are full fledged 4-5 piece bands. Seeing these performers in their craft, performing live music is electric. The Ionian Music Events have an addictive sort of energy, and are known for their inclusivity and welcoming attitude. The Mercury Mall gig attracted a wide range of people from age 2 to 80, who stayed to watch, dance, sing along and meet some of the talented young performers and the people behind the Ionians.
