Take a trip back to a decade when pirate radio, record shops, clubs and dancefloors helped shape Romford’s electronic music scene. Across The Mercury, you’ll find nods to the local 90’s rave scene and activities to get involved with, in support of the forthcoming MEGA MEGA: Romford’s Suburban Sound Revolution exhibition, celebrating the club and dance music culture of Romford and Havering.

All events run throughout the day from 11am – 3pm at The Mercury Shopping Centre and are all free.

Make your own zine / Level 1
Get transported back to the 90’s with artist Robin Whalley through a hands-on Zine making workshop. Flick through vintage magazines and discover (or re-discover) the aesthetic of the 90s. Create a zine based on 90’s rave culture, explore fashion, local history, alternative music culture, and a Romford before your time!
What is a Zine? A Zine (pronounced Zeen) is a small, self-published book that is often made on a low budget and reproduced through a photocopier.

Feeling Synth With The NO Collective / Level 1
Experiment with unique MIDI’s through your phone and feel what it was like in a time where synth wasn’t so predictable. Using plant pheromones, human touch, water, fruit and random objects, help us create a 90’s collaborative piece of music or simply create samples on your devices to take home for your own projects.

Live music from PURE FM / Level 1
Enjoy the sounds of PURE FM as DJs perform live sets in support of the forthcoming MEGA MEGA exhibition, celebrating the club and dance music culture of Romford and Havering.  Locally owned PURE FM is one of the UK’s leading dance music radio stations, broadcasting digitally worldwide. The station will also be marking the launch of its new DAB service, bringing PURE FM to listeners across Essex and East London. www.purefmuk.com

Experience BOSH / Level 3, The Mercury Shopping Centre Car Park
Discover BOSH, a specially commissioned artwork by artist Rosie Strickland. Step inside a modified VW Golf and enter an intimate sound world inspired by Romford’s rave years. Combining music, voices and recordings gathered across Romford, BOSH explores the anticipation, excitement and memories of a night out.

Share your memories of Romford and Havering’s club culture / Daniel’s View, Level 3 (outside the Lumiere)
Come and meet Havering London by Daniel’s View and share your stories, photos, memorabilia and memories of Romford’s rave and clubbing scene. Got a great picture of you out on the town? We want to see it!
