Suburban Legends: Be part of an epic Romford Celebration

Be part of something special this summer. We're seeking 100 people to become costumed characters and animate Romford Market on Saturday 29 August 2026 as part of the Greenwich + Docklands International Festival.

As part of Market Town, we’re inviting local groups and individuals to help bring Suburban Legends to life – uncovering, reimagining and animating the myths, memories and half-told stories that shape Romford.

Suburban Legends is a spectacular performance that will bring to life the legends, myths and memories of Romford Market this August Bank Holiday weekend. We’re seeking 100 local people to become costumed characters and help us animate Romford Market on Saturday 29 August 2026 as part of the Greenwich + Docklands International Festival.

We’re looking for both individuals and groups – including dance companies, theatre groups, choirs and community organisations – who would like to be part of the live performance element in Romford town centre. Whether you’re a community group, organisation, or an individual, we’d love to hear from you.

No experience is needed, just enthusiasm, a connection to Romford and a willingness to show up and take part! With costumes and support from a facilitator, we’ll ensure you’re performance ready. To take part you must be aged 18+ and available on the following days:

Briefing: Saturday 22 August 2026
Rehearsal: Tuesday 25 August 2026, 6.30-9.30pm
Performance: Saturday 29 August 2026, 10-5pm

Come and join us for interactive, relaxed workshops across Havering in June and July where you can share your stories of Romford.

Romford Market has stood at the heart of Havering for centuries; a place of trade, spectacle, community and characters. We’re gathering narratives and stories, tales, yarns and memories that the market has inspired across the generations. These can be recent and historical; magical and mythological.
